2.1 Information You Provide Directly
When you set up the app, we collect:
- Your Name: Used to identify you in emergency notifications sent to your contact
- Emergency Contact's Email Address: Required to send alerts if you don't check in
- Emergency Contact's Name (Optional): Used to personalize emergency notifications
2.2 Information Collected Automatically
- Device Identifier: A unique ID generated for your device (not your personal information)
- Check-in Timestamps: Date and time when you tap the check-in button
- Streak Data: Number of consecutive days you've checked in
- Last Check-in Date: Stored locally on your device and on our server
2.3 Information We DO NOT Collect
We respect your privacy and do NOT collect:
- Location data or GPS coordinates
- Your phone number
- Access to your contacts, photos, or media
- Health or medical information
- Financial or payment information
- Browsing history or app usage outside our app
- Advertising identifiers
- Analytics or tracking data for marketing purposes
3. How We Use Your Information
We use the information we collect solely for the following purposes:
- App Functionality: To track your daily check-ins and maintain your streak counter
- Emergency Alerts: To send email notifications to your emergency contact if you miss check-ins for 48 hours
- Service Communication: To send you important updates about the app (rare)
- Technical Support: To help resolve technical issues if you contact us
We will NEVER:
- Sell your personal information to anyone
- Use your data for advertising or marketing to third parties
- Share your information except as described in this policy
- Track you across other apps or websites
4. Data Storage and Security
4.1 Where We Store Your Data
- Server Storage: Your information is securely stored on servers hosted by DigitalOcean
- Local Storage: Some data (like your streak) is stored on your device for quick access
4.2 Security Measures
We take security seriously and implement:
- Industry-standard encryption for data transmission (HTTPS/TLS)
- Secure server infrastructure with regular security updates
- Limited access to personal data (only when necessary for app functionality)
- Regular security assessments
4.3 Data Retention
- We retain your data as long as you actively use the app
- If you stop using the app for 90 consecutive days, we may automatically delete your data
- You can request immediate deletion at any time (see Section 7)
5. Sharing Your Information
5.1 With Your Emergency Contact
When you miss check-ins for 48 hours, we send an email to your designated emergency contact containing:
- Your name
- Information that you haven't checked in
- A request for them to check on you
5.2 Service Providers
We use the following third-party services to operate the app:
- DigitalOcean: Server hosting and infrastructure
- Email Service Provider: To send emergency notification emails
These providers are contractually obligated to protect your data and only use it for providing their services to us.
5.3 Legal Requirements
We may disclose your information if required by law, such as:
- In response to a valid legal request (court order, subpoena)
- To protect the safety of our users or the public
- To prevent fraud or illegal activity
5.4 Business Transfers
If we are involved in a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, your information may be transferred. We will notify you before your information is transferred and becomes subject to a different privacy policy.

You have complete control over your personal information:

You can view and update your information anytime in the app's Settings screen.
6.2 Correct Your Data
Update your name, emergency contact information, or email directly in the app.
6.3 Delete Your Data
You have the right to request deletion of your personal information. To delete your data:
- Delete the app from your device (this deletes local data)
- Contact us to request server data deletion (we'll process within 30 days)
6.4 Export Your Data
You can request a copy of your data by contacting us. We'll provide it in a common format (JSON or CSV).

You can manage notification permissions in your device's Settings app under Are You Dead Yet?
7. Children's Privacy
Are You Dead Yet? is not intended for use by children under 13 years of age. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe we have collected information from a child under 13, please contact us immediately and we will delete it.
8. International Users
Our servers are located in the United States. If you are accessing the app from outside the United States, your information will be transferred to and stored in the United States. By using the app, you consent to this transfer.
9. Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in our practices or for legal reasons. When we make changes:
- We will update the "Last Updated" date at the top
- For significant changes, we may notify you via the app or email
- Your continued use of the app after changes constitutes acceptance of the new policy
